Internship
Physics-based digital twin for
steel strip dynamics in
industrial production lines
Develop and validate dynamic strip models to tackle
industrial challenges in tension control, strip steering
and rolling on continuous processing lines.
From 01 March 2027, for 6 months
Maizières-lès-Metz, France.
Who are we
ArcelorMittal is one of the world's leading steel companies. Every day, its 154,000 employees in 60 countries help build a
better world with smarter steels that consume less energy and emit less carbon.
The Maizières campus
The Maizières campus is the group's largest R&D site with more than 700 employees who work daily to make steel a
cutting-edge product. Coming from the best academic backgrounds, its community of researchers, made up of more than
35 nationalities, designs and industrializes new products for the automotive, packaging and construction markets. To meet
the group's ambitions, the decarbonization of steel production is now one of the main drivers of research carried out on the
site.
What we are looking for
Level of Study: Bac+5 / Master
Domain: Modeling / Simulation
Skills: Mechanical, Process or General Engineering with an interest in physical modelling and industrial
process simulation.
Languages: French
Your role
Steel strips are processed at high speed on different continuous production lines. Their behaviour is influenced by strip
tension, motion and interactions with rolls and other equipment. Physical models, finite element simulations and industrial
data are used to analyse these phenomena and improve line operation.
The objective of this internship is to evaluate a component-based modelling tool based on principles similar to
MATLAB/Simulink. The intern will build dynamic models of different production lines or line subsystems and compare the
results with industrial data, existing R&D models and finite element simulations to assess the tool’s usefulness for future
R&D applications.
Internship missions:
1. Become familiar with the modelling tool and its main features and define relevant case studies with R&D specialists,
2. Build and tune dynamic models of continuous production lines (e.g. continuous annealing or cold rolling lines) or specific
line subsystems,
3. Perform simulations under different operating conditions and compare the results with industrial data, existing R&D
models and finite element simulations to identify the tool’s strengths and limitations.
4. Develop new models to simulate specific physical phenomena, such as strip tension, catenary behaviour, strip steering
and interactions with rolls.
6. Document the results and provide recommendations for future R&D applications.
What do we propose
