Internship
Development of a Dynamic
Simulator for a Cold Rolling
Mill to Study Vibration
Phenomena
Towards a Better Understanding of Chatter Instabilities
in Industrial Rolling Processes
From 01 March 2027, for 6 months
Maizières-lès-Metz, France.
Who are we
ArcelorMittal is one of the world's leading steel companies. Every day, its 154,000 employees in 60 countries help build a
better world with smarter steels that consume less energy and emit less carbon.
The Maizières campus
The Maizières campus is the group's largest R&D site with more than 700 employees who work daily to make steel a
cutting-edge product. Coming from the best academic backgrounds, its community of researchers, made up of more than
35 nationalities, designs and industrializes new products for the automotive, packaging and construction markets. To meet
the group's ambitions, the decarbonization of steel production is now one of the main drivers of research carried out on the
site.
What we are looking for
Level of Study: Bac+5 / Master
Domain: Modeling / Simulation
Skills: Mechanical Engineering, Dynamic Systems, Vibration Analysis, Automatic Control, MATLAB /
Simulink
Languages: French, English
Your role
Cold rolling mills are complex industrial systems used to produce high-quality steel strips. During operation, the interaction
between the strip, the rolls and the mill structure can generate vibrations that affect process stability, product quality and
productivity. Among these, chatter is one of the most critical vibration phenomena encountered in cold rolling and can
significantly limit mill performance.
Understanding the mechanisms leading to such vibrations remains a major challenge due to the strong coupling between
mechanical dynamics and rolling process behavior. Several simulation tools and process models have been developed by
ArcelorMittal to represent the general behavior of cold rolling mills.
The objective of this internship is to develop a specific dynamic simulation tool for investigating rolling mill vibrations.
Building upon existing rolling process models and simulation tools, the intern will extend the current modelling framework to
capture the dynamic behavior of the mill and allow the investigation of the chatter phenomena observed under industrial
mill conditions.
Internship mission:
•Review the state of the art on chatter and vibration phenomena in cold rolling mills.
•Analyze existing rolling process models and simulation tools available at ArcelorMittal.
•Extend an existing mill simulator tool to account for mill dynamics and chatter phenomena.
•Assess, calibrate and validate the simulation tool using available industrial data.
•Perform parametric studies to investigate the influence of process and mechanical parameters on vibration behavior and
chatter occurrence.
The intern will work closely with specialist researchers in rolling processes, modeling and automation. Regular interactions
with industrial experts will contribute to model improvement, validation and industrial data analysis.
