Internship
Coupling of rolling and
buckling models for the
prediction of flatness after
cold rolling
Advanced Finite Element modelling of cold rolling
From 01 February 2027, for 5 months
Maizières-lès-Metz, France.
Who are we
ArcelorMittal is one of the world's leading steel companies. Every day, its 154,000 employees in 60 countries help build a
better world with smarter steels that consume less energy and emit less carbon.
The Maizières campus
The Maizières campus is the group's largest R&D site with more than 700 employees who work daily to make steel a
cutting-edge product. Coming from the best academic backgrounds, its community of researchers, made up of more than
35 nationalities, designs and industrializes new products for the automotive, packaging and construction markets. To meet
the group's ambitions, the decarbonization of steel production is now one of the main drivers of research carried out on the
site.
What we are looking for
Level of Study: Bac+5 / Master
Domain: Mechanics / Physics
Modeling / Simulation
Skills: Solid Mechanics, Numerical Modelling, Finite Element Method
Languages: English, French
Your role
Context:
The accurate prediction of flatness defects after cold rolling of flat steel sheets is a challenging modeling problem involving
the prediction of instabilities at the exit of the mill. Finite element models used industrially for cold rolling only allow to
predict the effect of process parameters on residual stresses in the strip (latent flatness). The prediction of actual visible
defects requires the use of a second model, uncoupled from the rolling model, to simulate buckling of the strip under these
residual stresses.
In a recent collaboration between ArcelorMittal and LEM3, a MATLAB prototype coupled rolling and buckling model was
developed to better estimate the interactions between rolling in the roll bite and buckling at the exit of the stand.
The objectives of the master include:
* Familiarization with ArcelorMittal FEM rolling model and LEM3 MATLAB coupled model
* Parametric studies using the MATLAB model:
- effect of roll shape and other rolling parameters
- effect of numerical parameters (contact penalty, element size, projection methods, type of elements for the buckling)
* Comparison of residual stresses after the rolling phase, obtained by ArcelorMittal FEM Model and LEM3 MATLAB model
Locations:
The trainee will be contractually attached to ArcelorMittal Maizières R&D but the internship will be hosted both in LEM3 Lab
in Metz and in ArcelorMittal R&D center in Maizières les Metz.
